All pupils in Killarney Community College enjoy the benefits of Physical Education, with each class having one/two hourly P.E. classes each week. First years also have the option of a Sports module.
All students are encouraged to develop a healthy and active lifestyle. Exercise is important and we aim to show students how it can be part of everyone’s lives. We acknowledge that whilst many students enjoy the element of competition that comes from playing in a team, some students simply wish to take part in sport for fun and fitness.
The school provides a variety of sporting activities for boys and girls, both competitive and recreational. Also during the course of the year, pupils experience a wide range of activities, from all the major field and net games to Orienteering and Athletics.
We encourage all our students to get involved in extra-curricular activities and we provide them with ample opportunities in a wide range of sports at lunchtime and after school.
Ladies Football
Training at lunchtimes and every Wednesday after school. Ladies teams are entered in the Munster Junior Girls competition which begins at the end of September, the Kerry ETB competition which begins in January and a 2nd Year Kerry Blitz. We have been very successful in the last few years, reaching numerous Munster Finals and seeing some of our players represented on Kerry Teams.
Boys Football
Currently we are fielding 1st Year, U15, U16½ and Senior Boys Football teams. All of these teams are competing in a range of County and Munster competitions.
Training with the Kerry Development Officer Mr. Vince Cooper takes place every second week for both boys and girls.
Basketball
In recent years, the sport of basketball has been thriving not only in Killarney but in Kerry as a whole and it is very much a community effort between clubs and schools. At Killarney Community College we are delighted to offer student’s further opportunity to develop their basketball skills outside of PE class, through competitive basketball at a range of levels.
The school competes in 1st Year Boys and Girls, 2nd Year Boys and Girls, Cadette Boys and Girls and Senior Boys and Girls competitions. These games not only give the students the chance to test their skills but to also meet and interact with basketballers across a range of schools in Kerry and beyond. For students who play club basketball outside of the school setting, playing games against their club teammates are always great encounters.
For the past number of years Killarney Community College has excelled in offering their students one of the best experiences for any budding basketballer - the chance to be coached by an American player. The American basketballers who play for the local Killarney team, St. Pauls, offer their skills and guidance to the students of Killarney Community College, during their after school sessions on Wednesdays, a weekly session which the students thoroughly enjoy!
